Easy & Quick Rasam/saaru

Rasam is a very popular south Indian dish. A hot and spicy cup of Rasam is also a good soup. All special events seem to contain rasam. After having all the delicious heavy dishes in a celebration, most of us, would prefer to have nice hot rasam-rice (just before having curd rice :).
Whenever one of us is unwell, we prefer having rasam with rice. Feasting on a well made rasam-rice always gives a sense of satisfaction.

Preparation time: 15mins
Cooking time:15 mins
Makes 4 cups of rasam.


Tomatoes - 3 nos. medium size
Garlic - 1 small pod
Jeera/Cumin seeds - 2 tsp
Pepper - 2 tsp
Oil - 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
Dry red chillies - 4 nos.
Methi seeds(optional) - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - 2 sticks
Tamarind paste - 2 tbsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Chopped coriander leaves- 1/2 cup

  1. Heat a pan on medium flame and add 4cups of water.
  2. Half the tomatoes and add it to the pan.
  3. Add the tamarind paste and turmeric powder.
  4. Let it boil till the tomatoes get cooked well. Crush the tomato's in the process.
  5. In the mean time, use a crusher and crush jeera, pepper and garlic.
  6. Heat oil in a pan. Add the mustard seeds. Wait for it to crackle.
  7. Add dry red chillies, methi seeds, curry leaves.
  8. Add the crushed mixture(#5)  and saute for 2 mins.
  9. Add the sauteed contents into, boiling tomato and tamarind mixture(#4)
  10. Add coriander leaves and salt to taste.
Serve it hot with rice.
