Tea time snack - crispy onion fritters/ eerulli pakoda

By 23:22:00 ,

For those who considered Bengaluru to be a pleasant cosmopolitan city. This year was tough with highest ever recorded temperature. However, monsoons this year made sure Bengalurians remember good old days.
Imagine it is raining cats and dogs, the smell of frying hot crispy onion fritters will make your stomach growl(grrrrr...).
Onion fritters are mainly made of onion and gram flour, other ingredients being optional, you could change it according to your taste. It tastes best with a hot cup of tea or coffee. I always like to have it in the evening for tea.

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 20 min

Onion - 4 medium
Gram flour/besan - 1 cup
Turmeric powder -1/2 tsp
Chilly powder(optional/add it accordingly) - 1 tsp
Coriander powder(optional) - 1 tsp
Jeera/cumin seeds(optional) - 1 tsp
Coriander leaves(chopped)- 1/2 cup
Curry leaves - 3-4 sticks
Salt for taste

  1. Slice the onions finely.( if the onion slices are thick, the onions don't get cooked well)
  2. Chop the curry leaves and coriander leaves finely.
  3. Mix all the ingredients well with hand(Do not add any water. As you keep mixing, juices of onion is released which is enough for mixing).
  4. Heat oil in a pan on medium flame. Test the heat by dropping a pinch of the mixture in oil, if it rises to the top immediately, it is ready to fry.
  5. Take a small portion of the mixture, try to flatten it slightly with your fingers and drop it in the oil. Flattening makes sure the fritters fry well on all sides.
  6. Turn them multiple times to fry well.
  7. Serve it hot with chutney and hot masala tea.
