Drumstick is a green long, slender seed pod and an all time favorite of everyone. In south India drumsticks are mainly used to make sambhar (a gravy made of lentils and masalas).

My kids love drumsticks(pronounced as "dhumthick" by my toddler. haha!!) and the day I make drumstick sambhar, they eat all their food without complaining.

I usually make this sambhar fortnightly. Tastes good with rice, idli and dosa.

Preparation time : 15 min
Cooking time : 30 min
Makes 4 cups of sambhar

Ingredients


Drumsticks - 3 to 4
Water - 4 cups
Toor Dal - 1/2 cup
Onion - 2 medium
Tomatoes - 3 medium
Green chilly - 3 nos
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Garlic - 1 pod peeled and chopped
Oil - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 2 tsp
Curry leaves - 3 sticks
Sambhar powder - 3 tsp
Coriander leaves(chopped) - 3 tbsp
Salt to taste

Method:
  1. Peel drumsticks and cut them into 2 inch long pieces.
  2. Cook the drumsticks in 2 cups of water and add salt to it.
  3. Wash the Toor dal and add it to a pressure cooker.
  4. Chop onion, tomatoes and green chillies and add it to the pressure cooker.
  5. Next add the turmeric powder, a cup of water and salt.
  6. Close the lid of the cooker and place the weight.
  7. Place the pressure cooker on medium flame for approx. 4 whistles.
  8. Smash the dal well and add the cooked drumsticks and a cup of water.
  9. Heat a tadka pan and add oil.
  10. Add mustard seeds and let it crackle.
  11. Now add the chopped garlic and fry it till light brown.
  12. Add the curry leaves and sambhar powder.
  13. Pour the contents into the sambhar and let the sambhar boil for 10mins.
  14. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve it hot with rice, idli, dosa...
