Plain Rava Idli Recipe

Plain rava idli is mostly had for breakfast in South India accompanied with sambhar and Chutney. The main ingredients are idli rava and Urad dal. Idli rava is easily available in local stores. It is easy to make and needs very less ingredients.

In Mangalore region, plain idli rava batter is also used to make "moode"(batter poured into moulds made of Screw pine leaves) or "gunda" ( moulds made of jackfruit leaves).

Softness of these idli depends on consistency of the batter and fermenting. If the batter ferments well, you get really soft idlis. This is the reason why we grind urad dal at night and ferment batter overnight. I make it often because my kids love the softness of idlis and prefer to eat it with honey. Best accompaniment for these idlis is sambhar or chutney or both.

Preparation time : 10 mins
Cooking time:15 mins
Soaking and fermenting time: approx. 10 hrs

Ingredients:

Idli rava - 2 cups
Urad daal - 1 cup
Salt to taste

Method:

Soak Idli rava and urad dal in seperate bowl for 3- 4 hours.
Grind urad dal to a fine paste.
Mix idli rava and urad dal well.
Add salt and mix well.
Let it rest for 6-7 hrs.
Pour batter in greased idli moulds and steam it for 15 mins.
Serve hot with any of your favorite  Chutney's.
