Urad Dal Chutney Recipe

Urad dal chutney/ Split black gram chutney is a simple and delicious accompaniment to rice or dosa. I think of this chutney when anyone at home is down with fever. The distinct aroma of roasted Urad dal makes me eat it with rice when nothing else gets down my throat.

Urad dal chutney can also be made when you fall short of vegetables at home. I bet, it's distinct aroma and flavor will make you gulp down more rice/ dosa than you normally eat. This chutney is a simple one and can be made in a jiffy. 

Preparation time: 10 min


Urad dal - 2 tbsp
Coconut - 1/2 cup
Green Chillies - 3 (adjust according to your taste)
Ginger - 1 inch piece
Garlic - 3 cloves
Tamarind paste - 1 tsp
Salt to taste


  1. Heat a wok/ kadai and roast urad dal until it is golden brown.
  2. Allow it cool down.
  3. Add all the ingredients into a mixer grinder including roasted urad dal.
  4. Add enough water and grind it to a coarse paste.
  5. Serve fresh Urad dal Chutney with hot rice or dosa.
